Entrepreneurship is an activity of setting up a business or businesses, taking on financial risks in the hope of profit. A businessman is a man who works in commerce especially at the executive level.

Dhirajlal Hirachand Ambani, popularly known as Dhirubhai Ambani (28 December 1932- 6 July 2002) was an Indian business tycoon who founded Reliance Industries.

He was one of the sons of Hirachand Gordhanbhai Ambani, a village school teacher born in Chorwad, Junagarh district of Gujarat.

In 1948, he left for Port of Aden to work for A. Besse and Co. along with his brother Ramnikbhai. He later came to sell shell and Burmah oil products for the company.

Ambani began a business trading in apices in the late 1950s, calling his venture Reliance Commercial Corporation. He soon expanded into other commodities. His business grew quickly. After deciding that his corporation has grown pretty much, he shifted his attention towards synthetic textiles. He opened his first Reliance Textile mill in 1966. He gradually shaped Reliance into a petrochemicals behemoth and later added plastics and power generation to the company’s business.

In 1977, Ambani took the Reliance public after nationalized banks refused to finance him.

Ambani was credited with introducing the stock market to the average investor in India and thousands attended the Reliance Annual General Meetings.

He grew Reliance over the years.

Ambani handed over his business to his two sons, Mukhesh Ambani and Anil Ambani, in the mid-1980s, but continued to oversee the company until shortly before his death in 2002.

Now, Reliance has products like petroleum, natural gas, petrochemicals, media, textile, retail, telecommunications, television, environment, music, banking, and software.

Reliance became India’s first $150 billion company.

He built Reliance all on his own. Dhirubhai Ambani was a great businessman.
